6 / 10 / 2007 -- Hardware Ahoy
Greetings.
Yikes, it's been more than a week. Sorry...
I've had a lot of opportunity to brush up on my PC hardware skills, as I've made two upgrades to my personal "server" within the past three days. Given the right set of software, there's really quite a bit you can do with an antiquated 400 MHz Celeron -- I installed a new mounting bracket to hold three 3.5 inch hard drives in 2 5.25 inch bays, which left my final 5.25 inch bay open for a DVD burner. I bought one a few days after that for an incredible price (thank you, NewEgg), and I am in the process of integrating that into my daily "operations". I've got it installed, I just need to test the various media burning capabilities. On top of that, I'm experimenting with some new Linux software, and perhaps I might give virtualization a try.
Speaking of Linux, the new release of Ubuntu is approaching fast! October 18, 2007, for the next major release, 7.10 (or Gutsy Gibbon, if you prefer the quirky pet names they give their software). I'll be sticking with Kubuntu for my laptop -- it's just so much more functional than Ubuntu. I'll probably give Xubuntu a try for my server, just because it's something new, and I want to give Remote Desktop Connection a try (having just discovered the miracles of ssh).
Other than that, another slow week, but I'm grateful for the downtime.
Mr. Bond, signing off.
